StorPool Storage launches all-in-one software-based HCI solution integrated with Oracle Virtualization.

Alex Ivanov, Product Lead at StorPool Storage

StorPool Storage, which was founded in 2011, and makes software-defined primary data storage solutions, has announced the first all-in-one software-based HCI solution integrated with Oracle Virtualization. StorPool Storage seamlessly integrates with Oracle Virtualization, which provides full-featured KVM management with straightforward, predictable support economics, while StorPool adds sub-100µs in-VM latency and a rich data-management platform for always-on operations. The solution provides businesses worldwide with an enterprise-grade, automated, and simple foundation for their business-critical workloads.

“We now have over a million end users – deployed in over 30 countries,” said Alex Ivanov, Product Lead at StorPool Storage, which originated in Bulgaria. “We are now in control of our own destiny.”

The integration with Oracle Virtualization is an important one for StorPool.

“The Oracle integration is also very recent, and was just built in the last few months,” Ivanov said. “There are no good alternatives to VMware on the market, and they all have their challenges. Public clouds are complex, risky, time-consuming and involve expensive application rewrites. Getting monolithic core apps to run as microservices on containers is not a good idea for many apps. Nutanix replaces one lock in for another adding another lock and isn’t much cheaper. Microsoft Hyper-V has limitations for large scale deployments, and development has been deprioritized in favor of Azure and Azure Stack. In the past, you had Cinderlib, which  would work with any vendor, but three years ago Cinderlib was deprecated, hasn’t been maintained, and won’t be fixed.

“That’s why Oracle reached out to us,” Ivanov said. “Oracle has had a weakness when it comes to HCI and Disaster Recovery. They saw this as opportunity to solve a  pain point with our vSAN.”

The software-based hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) solution integrates compute, storage, networking, and orchestration to reduce the complexity teams face when moving from other hypervisors and HCI solutions or repatriating from the public cloud. It delivers end-to-end automation, high availability, and the elimination of storage silos, with optional replication for backup and disaster recovery with compelling RPO/RTO targets. StorPool Storage, together with Oracle Virtualization, provides the performance, reliability, and simplicity organizations need for all of their workloads, and when customers need to go beyond HCI, the platform supports disaggregated growth with compute-only or storage-only nodes that these customers’ clouds need.

“StorPool Storage services and Oracle VMs run on the same hardware, which can be commercial off the shelf hardware,” Ivanov indicated. StorPool Storage’s integration with Oracle Virtualization provides ultra-fast performance and efficiency for Oracle environments. “The combined solution enables organizations to achieve significant business benefits by replacing VMware on the fly. You can also optimize costs with no vendor lock in because Oracle uses an open source model, which has enterprise grade support and fair pricing. It has 24/7/365 support with response times as low as sub-1-hour, provided by StorPool and Oracle for their respective layers of the HCI solution, complemented by a pay-as-you-grow subscription model for the storage layer. It also bills only for the data stored in the system.”

Ivanov noted as well that the Oracle integration benefits because StorPool developed a new interface for managed block storage.

“It can easily upgrade either plug-in or Oracle virtualization components,” he said.

Since Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware, migrating away from the platform has become a strategic priority for many businesses. However, rebuilding on open platforms like KVM can be challenging, as it can involve stitching together storage, compute, networking, orchestration, and backup/disaster recovery. Many organizations hesitate because the migration path looks too complex, too risky, or too costly. StorPool Storage eliminates the headaches of complex integrations that require extensive manual work and deep expertise, with the potential for downtime. With a modern software-defined storage platform fully integrated with Oracle Virtualization, organizations gain a system that adapts to their needs in real-time – helping ensure high performance, resilience, and scalability.

“Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware has fundamentally reshaped the global virtualization landscape, creating a cascade of challenges for organizations,” said Boyan Ivanov, CEO of StorPool Storage. “StorPool has been battle-tested in very demanding production environments for nearly 15 years, powering some of the fastest, most resilient infrastructures worldwide, while Oracle Virtualization is trusted to virtualize the business-critical applications of enterprises around the globe. Together, we have created a powerful, future-ready virtualization platform that keeps your business running at full speed.”

“The big deal here is that you can use a stack that is fully supported by Oracle and finally get away from VMware’s grip on your business,” Alex Ivanov concluded.
