Komprise adds localized multi-site management capability in 4.0 release

The addition of the ability for the user to set different data management policies and activities for separate geos and branches is done through a single dashboard, which also facilitates even stronger analytics capabilities.

Data management as-a-service provider Komprise has launched the 4.0 version of their Komprise Intelligent Data Management software. The big news with this release is the addition of multi-site data management capabilities, to set local policies in different areas. They have also deepened their analytics capabilities, to provide full visibility across billions or even trillions of files.

Komprise is coming off a strong 2020.

“COVID was challenging for everyone, but we saw our business grow pretty nicely because a lot of people went to the cloud,” said Krishna Subramanian, Komprise’s Chief Operating Officer. “We grew our ARR by over 70%. With 4.0, we are responding to customer requests to add some additional capabilities. They told us that they were now using us more globally, and that they were using us in multiple data centres. They asked us if we could add a multi-site capability where we could roll up data from several data centres into a single dashboard.”

Komprise 4.0 facilitates this by allowing centralized management where the user can set up multiple sites with their own storage and separate data management policies and activities. All the sites are managed from a single, on-prem or cloud-based Komprise Director. Each site also has its own Komprise Observer virtual machines that controls policies and execution locally within each site, connecting to all the storage and clouds for that site and performing the associated data management tasks.

“This ability to localize execution is a big leap forward,” Subramanian said. “It allows customers to set different policies in say, Europe, compared to the U.S., and to do a global search across all of them. That’s the biggest thing here, the new multi-site management capabilities. It’s a big deal because we work with such large volumes of data. There could be hundreds of PB of data being rolled up into a global dashboard.”

Subramanian said this capability isn’t just for very large enterprises.

“It is not only the largest organizations who can use this,” she said. “It’s anyone who has many sites – whether they are branches or geos – or different security policies on data in different places. It applies to any need to localize policies. Bigger enterprises all have this need, but so do smaller ones with branches. It also helps service providers with multiple tenants they manage, although this is not a service provider edition. This release is more about multi-site management.”

The other new capability – the deeper analytics capability –  comes from the creation of a single searchable virtual data lake of all unstructured data through the new centralized dashboard.

“As we provide access to all this information, we also index all the data so you can do deep analytics,” Subramanian said. “The multi-site across all of a customer’s sites is not easy to do because its billions of files – possibly trillions of files – all of which are indexed. It’s our distributed background that helps us do those things. We can give visibility across multiple clusters of multiple vendors and multiple clouds and multiple sites. It’s a magnitude that’s many times higher than the status quo today.”
