Hewlett Packard Enterprise [HPE] has again enhanced its GreenLake hybrid cloud through the announcement of a definite agreement to acquire hybrid cloud software vendor Morpheus Data. The deal, which is slated to close in Q4 of HPE’s fiscal year, is intended to make HPE the first vendor to be able to offer a full hybrid cloud suite.
HPE has moved to strengthen its hybrid capabilities available through its HPE GreenLake cloud with the announcement of a definite agreement to acquire hybrid cloud software vendor Morpheus Data. The deal complements other HPE cloud capabilities stemming from acquisitions such as IT operations management leader OpsRamp in 2023 and Zerto in 2001 and is specifically targeted at making HPE the first vendor to provide a full hybrid cloud suite, by expanding the hybrid operations capabilities available through a single platform with HPE GreenLake cloud. Unifying complete hybrid capabilities on a single platform like HPE GreenLake brings together an even fuller portfolio of hybrid capabilities on a single platform.
Morpheus has been in business since 2015, so is not a new company, and also is highly differentiated from other companies in the space.
“There are various things that Morpheus has brought to the market,” said Rajesh Raheja, SVP and GM for HPE Private Cloud Product. “They are the leading vendor in terms of multi-cloud capabilities. Because they are very holistic, they are hard to put in a box and classify, something that is increasingly important in a growing hybrid world. They are also a mix of public and private cloud capabilities, something that really lets them shine.”
The complementary nature of the Morpheus capabilities also fit into HPE’s hybrid cloud strategy,
“Our strategy is having this hybrid cloud portfolio,” Raheja stated. “Both OpsRamp and GreenLake have some aspects of the Morpheus capabilities, which bring them even closer together, and the FinOps capabilities of OpsRamp and Zerto complete the picture.” It all provides customers with end to end simplicity across the portfolio. We are also currently looking at making use of capabilities in Morpheus, like its virtualization capability, that we have not used before. We have similar types of capabilities elsewhere and our intention is to look and see how they can be jointly leveraged for customers.”
The addition of Morpheus Data’s’ FinOps capabilities will also enable customers to understand their cloud spend, put guardrails around usage and optimize their workloads to lower costs.
“We can orchestrate Day 1 and Day 2 FinOps capabilities through our deep telemetry experience,” Raheja said.
Morpheus Data worked extensively with HPE before the acquisition. However, they also worked closely with Dell and other HPE competitors. Raheja said that nothing will change there.
“Going forward, Morpheus will continue to support all its customers,” Raheja indicated. “HPE is committed to keeping its platform open.”
Morpheus Data was committed to working with channel partners before, and Raheja said that won’t change either following the acquisition.
“This is a major factor in our ability to support mult-cloud management,” he said.
The transaction is expected to close early in the fourth quarter of the HPE 2024 fiscal year, subject to customary closing conditions.
